The golden eagle who couldn't hunt
A banded golden eagle 509-50217 puzzled observers by not hunting. Tracked from Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in New York to Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina and Brigantine Refuge in New Jersey, it was cared for by Dr. Walter Spofford and later Howard Brown before being housed at Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland. The bird, weighing about five to seven pounds, showed little fear of people and was fed steak while under protection. Scientists at Patuxent ponder why the eagle does not hunt like its wild counterparts.

Yale Biologist Urges Immediate Wilderness Preservation
Yale biologist Dr. Charles L. Remington called for immediate preservation of select wilderness areas for scientific and educational research. He proposed a national preserve concept limiting access to protect fragile sites such as the Channel Island chain off southern California, Beckley Bog in Connecticut, parts of New England coast, the Pine Barrens in New Jersey, and upper Santee River swamps in the Southeast. Meanwhile in Vermont, two New York skiers were found safe after getting lost on a cross country trek near Winhall, spending a night in a snow-covered hole before emerging Saturday morning.
