Panel urged to approve shield law for reporters
A Senate constitutional rights subcommittee heard calls to pass absolute shield legislation to protect reporters from testifying about confidential sources. Sen. Alan Cranston and officials from the Reporters Committee argued the law must cover state and federal courts to prevent a patchwork of rights across states and to maintain access to inside information. The hearing, expected to include many lawmakers and officials, weighs extending protections beyond the federal level.
