Brass Key Inn and Lodge Destroyed by Early Fire
An early morning blaze gutted the Brass Key restaurant and lodge on Vermont Route 1130 in East Manchester, threatening neighboring Hilske property. Fire Chief Bourn said flames engulfed the cocktail lounge and upper restaurant. two women escaped, a dog died. Four trucks and 25 firefighters fought the fire using extensive hose lines. Cause under investigation by state Fire Marshal’s Office. Local chef/owner Hilske unavailable for comment. Brass Key opened August 1964 under Douglas and Mrs. MacDougall, later named for brass keys in Mrs. MacDougall’s collection.
