Carter revises singles taxes to curb unmarried couples

Washington UPI reports President Carter’s tax rebate plan faces changes as the House Ways and Means Committee rewrites the tax portion of his $31.2 billion stimulus. A phase out lowers rebates for singles earning over 13,750 and over 25,000 limits, shifting benefits toward lower income groups and families while reducing gains for middle and upper income singles. Carter also lowers standard deductions for singles to 2,200 and raises couples to 3,000, aiming to curb incentives to remain single and cohabit.

Pay hike standoff stalls Senate and House action

Lawmakers failed to secure a roll call vote on a proposed 13000 annual pay raise for Congress, boosting salaries from 44600 to 57500 and lifting pay for federal judges and top officials by about 28 percent. The Senate blocked disapproval, the House eyed adjournment, and a symbolic protest aimed at forcing a vote proceeded as Sunday implementation loomed.

School bans male students from viewing birth film

In Montville high school, seven male students were excluded from a natural childbirth film after a parent complained her daughter would feel self conscious. Principal Francis Duff said the boys would view it separately later, though some students and a childbirth educator urged inclusive viewing to foster better understanding of sex and birth. The school plans to bring the film back for joint viewing and discussion.
