Tax Subsidy Proposed For Private Institutions
In Montpelier Governor Hoff proposed a state tax subsidy for lands owned by private institutions amid a House plan to restore tax rolls to local lists. He directed the tax commissioner to study costs and suggested funding towns in lieu of private land taxes, with church lands taxed but deemed negligible. Hoff said a subsidy of private school land could be about 100000 annually, while state land would return to local grand lists with roughly 300000 in taxes due.
