Forest Service plan curbs ski expansion in Deerfield Valley
The U S Forest Service released its proposed land-use plan for the Deerfield River region in southern Vermont, sharply limiting development by Carinthia Haystack and Mount Snow on National Forest land. It blocks Mount Snow's proposed four-lift complex in Cold Brook, keeps Carinthia from adding lifts, and restricts Haystack to 30 acres of new trails with no new lifts. The plan, born from a 1971 master plan push and a NEPA hearing set for April 5, aims to balance capacity with environmental concerns while forcing ski areas to seek permits or court review for any expansion on public land.
