Spanish officials freed in shootout near Madrid

Police stormed two Madrid suburbs and freed Gen. Emilio Villaescusa Quilis and Antonio Maria de Oriol y Urquijo after a shootout with GRAPO guerrillas who had held them since late January and early March. Both officials were in good health. Police reported arrests and ongoing roadblocks near Madrid. In Barcelona, four leftists shot two police, one killed, one injured, amid continuing violence.

Vermont House Repeals Fuel Tax Step by Step

Vermont House Ways and Means Committee endorsed eliminating the nine percent income tax surtax and the three percent sales tax on fuel and electricity for residential heating. The plan totals a ten million dollar four year tax cut, with phased removal starting next year. Dissenters Candon and Smith opposed the surtax repeal.
