Aphasia film at McCullough Mansion showcased by Paul Gray

A seriocomic screening titled Aphasia presented last weekend at the McCullough Mansion. Gretchen Gray led the performance and sound design while Paul Gray directed the acting ensemble portraying inmates and their intertwined roles under a female psychiatrist’s hypnotic treatment. The piece used the mansion interiors and grounds for vivid scenes including a chase through a turret staircase and garden ballet of flower-cutouts. The plot follows a new patient within a layered narrative framed by a visiting psychiatrist who guides the viewer through the tangled minds of the patients named Psychedel Queen Electro-Erata Sado- Clown Philos Fatale and more. The final act centers on a wedding breakfast as power and masks clash with the psychiatrist. The production blends nonverbal soundtrack cues with dramatic encounters, leaving audiences torn between watching and listening and savoring the unsettling ambiance.
