Vermont VSAC funds buoy student aid amid austerity debate
The Vermont Student Assistance Corp executive director Ron Iverson says the agency remains active as it plans about 1.3 million in grants for 1970 71, with an estimated 3 100 Vermonters aided. The program, tied to need and a 10 000 adjusted gross income cutoff, has expanded from 265 students and 83 400 in 1965 to broader support, while Gov. Davis proposes extra funds for 1972 to assist up to 6 674 students at an average grant around 665. The Legislature weighs larger increases to fund education formula, and Speaker Walter Kennedy has urged delaying extra VSAC funds. Iverson stresses the student loan program and warns tuition hikes could erode gains. Deadline for grants is Feb 15, with guidance counselors aiding applications.
