A massive short circuit at Con Ed waterside generator caused a major blackout in midtown Manhattan from 7:12 p.m. to 11:42 p.m. Deep outages disrupted offices, transit, and broadcasts while improvisations lit candlelit venues. No injuries reported. investigation into causes begun.
