Tet ceasefire begins as Viet Cong renews violence in Saigon
The Tet truce in Saigon and Vietnam began with a grenade attack in Cholon that killed seven and others dead in separate incidents. A U.S. unarmed jet was shot down over North Vietnam but the pilot was rescued. Both sides reported limited ceasefire violations as allied forces issued a large leaflets drop and prepared for four days of suspension.

A late night blaze engulfed a 10th story penthouse restaurant in Montgomery trapping 26 people. Victims were found near the far end from the elevator and stairs as smoke and heat blocked escape. roof collapse hampered recovery while about 40 customers and employees were present. Some escaped via elevator before flames spread.

Garage Fire Destroys Benhi Building Adjacent Property
A pre dawn blaze leveled a garage near the Benhi building in 20 below zero conditions. Donald Capella owned the garage at 323 Pleasant St and was away at work. Firefighters reported heavy flames, sparking fear for nearby Ca pella residence, and the cause remained undetermined with a late alarm. The fire killed Ed Pepper and his wife, and Rose Doane was reported missing.
