A heavy snowfall this afternoon shifts to flurries tonight with low temperatures from zero to 5 above. Snow accumulation is likely 6 to 10 inches in southern portions while yesterday’s high was 23 and low 1. Early today the temperature was 1 with sunset at 5 10 and sunrise at 7 01.
Leon R. Eldred, former selectman and village trustee, confirms candidacy for the single open selectman seat at the upcoming town meeting. Incumbent Joseph Higgins seeks re election as Democrats caucus tonight at 8 in the County Courthouse while Republicans meet Thursday at 8 in the State Armory. Eldred cites a need for tighter finances and careful long term commitments as he returns to town government after service dating to the 1950s and 1960s.
The Vermont Supreme Court refused to review a Pittsfield Massachusetts firm’s bid to bar removal of six billboards along U S 7 in Bennington. The case could affect Shaftsbury’s anti sign ordinance and similar rules in 95 other towns, posing questions about comprehensive zoning and police power to regulate outdoor advertising.
Legislative Council in Montpelier will offer a three part tax reform package including personal income tax changes a piggyback system at 25 percent of federal liability and exemptions rising from 500 to 600 per dependent. Repeal of poll tax and old age tax also proposed with reforms to personal property inventories and capital gains.
Gov Philip H Hoff sent Marian Taylor of Bennington to the Vermont Senate for confirmation to the State Education Board. She chairs Mt Anthony Union High School board and could fill one of three vacancies. Also recommended for board membership were Harold Raynolds of Springfield and Dean Finney of St Johnsbury.
The Vermont House received the administration’s bill to convene a constitutional convention at the statehouse on Oct. 2. Gov. Hoff backs reforms, seeking reapportionment into the constitution. The measure would create 150 delegates elected by district, serve without pay, with a $90,000 appropriation for costs.
U S planes roared through Cambodian airspace and attacked Viet Cong units along the Cai Bac River border as Tet cease fire neared. The strikes targeted a jungle area after a Claymore mine killed and wounded American soldiers, while U S bombers avoided Cambodian soil and concentrated fire on the jungle. The action accompanied Operation Gadsen by the 25th and 4th Infantry Divisions aimed at flushing out Viet Cong in War Zone C amid continuing DMZ defoliation moves. Earlier Viet Cong attacks hit four U S air fields, escalating tensions before the truce.
London reports Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin moved talks from Vietnam to trade relations. Wilson urged Britain’s goods including buses and electronics. both sides eyed expanding Anglo-Soviet trade to ease East West tensions.
Washington UPI reports Ambassador Arthur J. Goldberg announced a fact-finding trip to Vietnam in about ten days. The trip aims to assess conditions and gather firsthand information for U.S. policy considerations.
Indonesian President Sukarno is expected to be removed and tried for treason after a Nasution backed resolution by 300 anti Communist students demanding his ouster. Gen. Suharto’s forces were placed on alert near parliament as 40,000 protesters flooded Jakarta in a peaceful show of force.

Adverse weather forced postponements of the Southern Vermont League clash between undefeated ECHS Sakers and Rutland Raiders at BCHL gym, and the Molly Stark matchup of Arlington Eagles versus Leland & Gray Rebels in Townshend. Remaining games Mt Anthony Patriots versus West Rutland Golden Horde in West Rutland and Burr & Burton versus Wallingford in Ludlow had not yet been officially postponed.
Soviet and Chinese protest turmoil escalated as Red Guards breached the Soviet Embassy in Peking, threatening diplomats, while Russians briefly entered the Chinese Embassy in Moscow. Beijing demanded safety guarantees as demonstrations against Brezhnev and Kosygin spread nationwide, with 400 Muscovites massing outside the Chinese Embassy to deliver petitions amid ongoing anti-Soviet rioting.
