Statewide zoning opposed by Vermont planning advocates
Frederic Sargent argues against a statewide zoning plan for Vermont. He urges strengthening regional and interagency planning with existing county and watershed groups, using open space and land use teams, and coordinating rather than duplicating efforts to avoid new costs. He cites successful interagency pilots in South Burlington and Franklin County.

Williams loses seniority rights in Mississippi Democrat
Washington (UPI) House Democrats kept Rep. John Bell Williams of Mississippi far down the seniority ladder by a 134 to 100 secret vote. Williams, a 20-year veteran, said he would not serve on any committee this session and called the vote a calculated insult to Mississippi and its Democratic party. He vowed to skip Democratic caucuses but remain seated as a Democrat.
