Soviets to Cut Staff at Peking Embassy

Soviet government plans to reduce its embassy in Peking to a skeleton staff and urge the Chinese mission in Moscow to cut its personnel to a similar level. Riots and hostile actions by Chinese authorities have made normal diplomatic work impossible, with the embassy under siege for seven days. Selectmen Set $377,450 For 1967 Town Budget

Bennington selectmen briefly scanned a proposed 1967 town budget of 377,450, about 15,000 higher than 1966’s 363,000 but below actual 1966 spending of 392,207. The highway fund shifts under a new state law cut the tax rate by half while preserving roughly the same revenue, with $50,000 raised for the highway fund from a 50 cent rate. Also, Walloomsac Road was renamed from West Road at Mrs. R. B. Leake’s request, and YMCA pool officials asked for 8,990 in operating costs with 9,000 set aside in the general fund. The board approved upgrades to facilities, rejected a new dump truck, budgeted 1,200 for engine work, and allotted 200 to improve Bennington Airport lounge and divide the rest room into separate men's and women's facilities.

January Thunder Streaks Sky Over Snowbound Bennington

In Bennington a freak lightning and thunder display lit the sky during a heavy snowstorm at about 9 p.m. after over an inch of snow fell. Residents thought an airplane was in distress. NOAA meteorologist Paul Bohne said such displays, while rare, are not unheard of.
