In 1973 Vermont faced a series of crises as Governor Salomon, a Democrat, took office. The year began with a fatal fire at Rutland Town House Hotel during the inaugural ball, followed by a Delta jet crash killing 89. A severe flood caused over 60 million in damages, amid gas shortages, soaring prices, and energy anxieties.
