Washington Builds Three Floating Bridges in State History
Washington now operates three floating bridges across Lake Washington and nearby waters, a feat once met with ridicule. The first opened in 1940 at 6,561 feet, financed 7.5 million dollars and paid off in nine years. The second spans Salt Hood Canal at 1.7 miles, opened two years ago at 17.6 million. The third, 1.5 miles long, opened last August at 25 million, tolls may be removed by 1975. A fourth is planned. The trio are the world’s heaviest and longest floating spans, each crossing waters over a mile wide.
