Bus fare hike challenged by White House agency
The White House inflation monitoring agency challenges proposed 10 percent fare increases by Greyhound Trailways and 30 other interstate bus operators, arguing the hikes six months after 11 percent rises would burden the poor elderly and young who rely on buses. A second item notes a federal court reset on Carter Hungary crown return suit, with a Budapest ceremony planned. Sen. Dole claims the move needs Senate ratification as a treaty.

Senators accuse Califano of restricting abortion funding
Senators Edward Brooke and Warren Magnuson charged Secretary Califano with seriously misconstruing or failing to follow Congress on liberalizing federal funding for abortions in rape or incest cases. In a Dec 22 letter, they urged him to correct his Dec 10 statement, which they say narrows funding beyond legislative intent and could shape official guidance before final regulations are issued.

The disaster marks the fourth such incident in a week, with over 50 killed across the events, possibly linked to dry weather and grain dust regulations.
