Gov Thomas P Salmon outlined a $11.6 million tax package to fund a $163 million general fund budget. He would cut dozens of state jobs and close several programs while expanding sales, cigarette, and rooms and meals taxes, and broaden the sales tax to more goods.
Vermont Highway Department will try to comply with lower court conditions to lift the injunction blocking Route 7 construction from Bennington to Manchester. Highway Commissioner John T. Gray said the FHWA should prepare a new impact statement and begin the regional study within six months after the injunction is lifted to allow Vermont to proceed with work on the 20 mile segment.
Los Angeles UPI reports Jack Benny died of pancreatic cancer at his Holmby Hills home. House guests included Frank Sinatra and George Burns with tributes from Bob Hope Ronald Reagan and Rosalind Russell. Benny who claimed age 39 in his act pioneered radio humor and vaudeville style lasting fame and philanthropy.
In Montpelier UPI Burgess accuses New England Telephone Co of reduced quantity and quality of service. Public Service Board hearings are urged as the company denies cutbacks while Reder cites normal operations and falling demand leading to staff shifts.
