Earliest Temple Menorah Found Near Temple Mount in Jerusalem

Excavators in Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter uncovered a 2 200 year old wall relief showing a seven branched Menorah likely tied to the Second Temple. Nahman Avigad of Hebrew University leads the team, dating the piece to the late first century BCE. It predates Rome’s depiction on Titus’s arch and may reflect direct eyewitness creation. The find, restored, is now on display at the Israel Museum and may influence views of the state seal’s Menorah symbol.
