Bennington digses out from under rugged snow disaster area declared
Bennington faced a severe snow siege with Gov. Deane C. Davis declaring Vermont a disaster area to enable National Guard cleanup. Bennington officials said the town was not a disaster area and roads opened, though drifted sidewalks remained. Street crews worked long hours with plows, bulldozers, and private helpers clearing streets and parking lots. Snow was dumped near the river and into nearby streams to be redirected. United Press International reports the 102 hour Christmas period will yield fewer road deaths than National Safety Council estimates. Weather kept many off roads, with at least 690 fatalities by 11 a.m. EST. States led by Texas 51, California 50, Florida 37, Michigan 29, Ohio and New York 25. Alaska, Delaware, Washington DC, Nevada, North Dakota and Vermont reported no traffic deaths.
