Shore drilling fight grows with spill

Officials see offshore oil exploration near New England as key to prosperity despite the Argo Merchant disaster. Governors from Rhode Island Massachusetts and New Hampshire push ahead with leasing next spring while a federal study forecasts 3 decades of offshore activity could bring 3.5 billion dollars in investments and 9,500 jobs. The plan offers 206 nine square mile tracts within 47 miles of the coast amid the Nantucket shoals oil slick. Rhode Island Governor Philip Noel argues drilling at home with strong safety standards is wiser than relying on foreign vessels and urges objective leasing despite the spill.

Argo Merchant spill turns off ship gear before grounding

The Liberian flag tanker Argo Merchant had its electronic navigating gear, including the depth finder, shut down before running aground near Nantucket. The resulting 7.6 million gallon slick spread over Georges Bank, with 20 percent coverage of the fishing grounds. Coast Guard said burning off part of the oil with silica kegs may be attempted, while winds shift and tarry oil forms on the sea. Navy divers collected sediment samples as officials acknowledge no technology can fully combat the spill on open seas.
