House votes to guarantee 125 million for Penn Central
The House approved 165 to 121 a government guarantee of 125 million to back bank financing for Penn Central, keeping about 3,000 daily trains running through March 21. Critics cited mismanagement and scandals linked to losses and an air taxi venture, while trustees warned of a January payroll crisis without funding. The measure aims to avert a shutdown that could cripple three-fourths of U.S. commerce.
