Johnson speaks to airmen before secret Vietnam stops

President Johnson addressed about 2,000 U S Air Force men at Korat Thailand then departed for unknown stops in Vietnam. The jet left the base near Bangkok at 6 a m local. He told the crowd the airmen help hasten the time of peace. He had spoken Friday night to 200 pilots at the officers club.

No Bombing by U.S. Planes During Truce Periods

UPI reports that the United States and allies agreed to 24 hour ceasefires in Vietnam on Christmas and New Year and a Tet truce later in January. Despite this, U.S. warplanes bombed targets near Hanoi and Haiphong using radar guidance, while 101st Airborne troops engaged Viet Cong guerrillas in a jungle mission northeast of Saigon. President Johnson addressed airmen at Korat, awarding six pilots with Distinguished Flying Crosses and leaving for Washington soon after.

Pope Urges Bomb Suspension During Rome Visit

In Rome for talks with Pope Paul VI, President Johnson is urged to halt bombing North Vietnam “in the name of the defenseless.” The Pope calls for frank peace negotiations and asks Hanoi for serious intent. Johnson may meet Italian President Saragat during a five hour stopover as Italian communists urge large anti Johnson protests.

Mrs Gordy Killed In New York Throughway Crash

Mrs. Ann Marie Gordy 70 of Bennington was killed in a two car crash on the New York Throughway south of Albany near Southern Boulevard. Also dead was Mrs. Rose Garten 70 of Brooklyn. A second car containing Maurice 57 Rosen and Mildred 52 Roseman of Far Rockaway brought to Albany Medical Center with undetermined injuries. Gordy lived on Overlea Road after moving from Vermont. funeral arrangements pending.

Gang Members Paid By Antipoverty Funds

CHICAGO UPID Five youth gang members awaiting trial on rape to murder charges have been paid up to 6500 a year as teachers and administrators in a federally financed antipoverty program. Three of the teachers, high school dropouts free on bond on rape charges, remain at work. The project aims to upgrade literacy and job qualifications for teens 16 to 24, with more than 200 attending classes. Other staff earn 5200 to 6500 annually. some face serious charges. Officials say the program is risky but showing progress in attitudes among participants and community. The program is Washington financed and unique nationally.

Engineers Inspect Cave-In Tunnel Near Tehachapis

Safety engineers inspected a caved in water project tunnel in Gorman California where 17 men trapped for over 17 hours were rescued. An escape passage was cut through earth as the north end work continued on the five mile long tunnel part of the 2.8 billion dollar California water project.
