Vermont Towns Face Flat School Aid Next Year
Vermont Governor Davis and the Education Department warn that state aid to local districts will likely stay around current levels, with no increase due to budget restraints and a shrinking share of local school costs. Local costs rise while enrollment grows, risking more budget defeats and higher property taxes. The education budget mirrors past levels at about 27.2 million, with overall state aid not expected to rise. Social Welfare remains the only department slated for an increase, though it falls short of the amount requested.
