West Mountain woodframe house destroyed by chimney fire

Rural Shaftsbury home on West Mountain Road burned Tuesday night after a hot metal chimney from a woodstove sparked the flames. Fire crews from North Bennington Shaftsbury Arlington and Bennington Rural fought a stiff wind, but by midnight the blaze had consumed the structure leaving residents confronting a total loss. Local son George Ackerman said his sister smelled something like burning hair and investigators reported the fire originated from the stove’s chimney.

Sadat rejects Israeli forces in West Bank in peace push

Globe-Union praised for lead cleanup efforts at Bennington plant

State Division of Water Resources investigator praised Globe Union Inc for cleaning soil contaminated with lead behind its Bennington battery plant. Prosecution decisions rest with Bennington County State’s Attorney Raymond Bolton after his post January report. A Banner report last Saturday alleged years of discharge from a salvage water tank onto the ground with water containing about 70 parts per million.

Probate judge suspended over advertising fee gain

Vermont Supreme Court suspended Rutland District Probate Judge Howard W Douglas for two weeks without pay for pocketing 2459.40 from estate advertising fees. The court ruled the act violated state law and three canons of ethics, requiring repayment. Douglas argued no prohibition existed, but the court disagreed and ordered the repayment.
