Tears Among Passengers On Jet Hijack to Havana

The 21st air hijacking of the year occurred aboard an Eastern Air Lines DC8 from Philadelphia to Miami. A Black man, identified as T. Washington, commandeered the plane with a little girl, claiming a public safety item and nitroglycerin. He told the pilot he was heading to Havana, prompting Cuban soldiers to escort him off after the jet returned to Miami. Passengers and crew, including stewardesses Uta Risse and Barbara Chenowith, described sobbing and sympathy for the hijacker’s plea about hatred and prejudice. Cuban authorities later noted the item was toy safety gear, while the man claimed he had glycerin.
