Betit backs delay in new welfare deadline in Vermont
Vermont Social Welfare Commissioner Joseph Betit said he would support a postponement of the January 1 deadline to separate welfare payments from social services functions. He noted Human Services Secretary designate Thomas Davis would likely request the delay and that federal officials might permit it, warning that denial could cost matching federal funds. The advisory council studying the department urged a delay, citing understaffing and service gaps, while Betit outlined a hiring freeze and a plan to train staff as the department shifts duties.
