Highway Crisis Stall Up in Air
MONTPELIER Although a hint was dropped an increase in the gas tax may be recommended, the state Highway Board Thursday came up with no formula to solve the financial problems threatening the road construction program for the Bennnington area. The board said that construction estimates are under intensive review and a complete report with recommendations will be made by month end for consideration by the legislature when it reconvenes in January. The stake is the accelerated construction of U.S. 7 from Pownal to Rutland into a modern four lane limited access highway to be completed by 1972. The 1966 legislature appropriated a 28.9 million bond issue for the purpose, but it became public three weeks ago this

Mental Patients Sought In Slaying of N.Y. Trooper
Two escapees from Marcy State Hospital in the Mohawk Valley are sought as possible killers of Trooper William G. Doyle who was shot while stopping a stolen auto about 10 a.m. near Syracuse. Doyle, 27, died in a rural area after the car he checked was linked to a Griffiss Air Force Base theft. Suspects Maurice Lillis, 29, and Raymond A. Bailey, 34, both from Syracuse, escaped Wednesday. Bailey had prior charges for shooting at a trooper during a stolen car pursuit. Doyle’s brother, Trooper John Doyle, found him dead. both are sons of retired Trooper John M. Doyle of Oswego.
