Scientists drill for answers in depths of Antarctic ice
A multinational team drills through the Ross Ice Shelf near McMurdo Sound in Antarctica to study physical biological and economic questions. The project aims to assess if the Marie Byrd Land ice sheet is unstable and could raise seas by up to 30 feet and to explore Antarctic bottom water origins. Ocean science and potential life beneath the shelf are examined with cameras microphones and an underwater TV system as NSF funds and Navy support back the effort involving ten nations.
