Pollution suit over Peace River spill targets Cities Service Oil
Florida officials seek 20 million dollars in damages from Cities Service Oil Co in a major pollution case. The file alleges negligence in building and maintaining a settling pond dam that allegedly broke Dec 3, releasing a billion gallons of phosphate slime into Whidden Creek and the Peace River. Biologists report most slime settled but the river remains heavily polluted, threatening bass tarpon and local fishing camps along the river. Local residents call the spill the worst in memory as they face economic losses.
