Vermont Democrats Back Mrs Westwood Despite Strauss Candidacy
Vermont Democratic Chairman Donald Webster says he will support national party head Robert Strauss though he did not back him this weekend. Vermont's four national committee votes favored George Mitchell of Maine at Saturday's meeting to fill the vacancy after Jean Westwood resigned. The Vermont delegation said Strauss is acceptable but the least acceptable among the candidates. The four representatives previously backed Mrs Westwood and opposed Strauss, seeking a compromise candidate such as Mitchell, Minot, or Lawrence O'Brien following November's defeat by Richard Nixon.
