Boston and Maine seeks state OK to drop Boston passenger trains
The Boston and Maine Railroad will ask the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities on January 6 to discontinue all passenger service into Boston. If approved the line would leave only Springfield to White River Junction, with through New York to Montreal trains using the tracks. The move follows ongoing deficits despite a subsidized experiment and rising ridership, ending all but select regional and cross-border service.

Edward Kennedy promises a thorough investigation. The railroad cites unprofitability amid a nine month deficit of about 1.84 million dollars despite state aid. If granted, similar actions could follow in New Hampshire Vermont and Maine.
