Tens of thousands of Russians protested in Moscow against American policies in Vietnam. Police prevented a march on the U.S. Embassy though a few tried to deliver a petition. The protests formed part of a growing nationwide opposition movement.
President Johnson accepts the resignation of McGeorge Bundy national security adviser effective February 28. Bundy leaves to head the Ford Foundation after five years of service with Johnson praising Viet Nam policy as right and brave. White House confirms hand written reply and notes replacement planning ongoing.
Pope Paul VI closed the Ecumenical Council in St Peter's Square before about 200000 mourners with a call for peace. The ceremony featured a procession of cardinals and bishops plus delegates from over 80 countries and altered Catholic practice with many decrees on relations, liturgy, liberty, and church governance.
South Vietnamese elite ranger units on a search and destroy mission about 30 miles south of Da Nang encountered heavy fire from foxholes and bunkers, suffering heavy casualties in near point blank automatic weapon fire. The Viet Cong offered a 12 hour Christmas Eve ceasefire for churchgoing, but officials viewed it as a pause rather than a peace initiative.

Paris reports that President Charles de Gaulle will run in the December 19 run off against leftist Francois Mitterrand. Information Minister Alain Peyrefitte announced after a cabinet meeting. Polls show de Gaulle leading 60 to 40. official results gave de Gaulle 44.6 percent in the Sunday vote.
L Judson Morehouse of Ticonderoga and native of Proctor Vermont was indicted in New York on charges of bribery and a 150000 conspiracy to obtain a liquor license for the Playboy Club. He pleaded not guilty, was paroled to await trial, and faces two conspiracy counts and two bribery counts.
In Salisbury a government order making listening to seditious foreign radio broadcasts in public places a crime took effect today. Violators face a 280 dollar fine or up to two years in jail. The rules target highly subversive broadcasts from neighboring countries.
Space center reports Gemini 7 has passed 1.5 million miles in its 14 day flight as Gemini 6 prep moves up for a history making rendezvous.
