Auburn to Press Fight Over Desegregation
Auburn University officials say they will continue their legal challenge to the court ordered desegregation while preparing for the potential enrollment of Harold Franklin, a Black applicant from Alabama State, as winter quarters begin January 3. Franklin would be the first Black student at Auburn and the fourth Alabama college to admit a Negro student. A 5th Circuit panel refused to delay the desegregation order pending appeal. The university reiterates its policy to pursue the court fight if necessary. Governor Wallace has called for a 30 day mourning period for Kennedy’s assassination and will observe a moratorium on political statements until the new year.
