Residents gathered at St Peter's Parish Hall to form a nonprofit with the aim of establishing a Bennington day care center for children of working mothers. A tentative budget is $30,000 for 50 kids, with 25 paid and 25 free offers considered, and space may be found locally by January.
North Vietnam said major procedural obstacles block the start of expanded negotiations to end the war. The dispute centers on whether the conference will be four party or two sided and if the Viet Cong will be a fully equal partner. U.S. and South Vietnamese leaders favor a two sided format with Viet Cong in the U.S. delegation and Saigon in the Hanoi delegation. The Hanoi spokesman said Saigon will not be recognized at the conference table. Talks are expected to begin next week in Paris with South Vietnam’s legislative leaders approving expanded talks and the U.S. awaiting the bombing halt terms before proceeding.
President elect Richard Nixon met with Ambassador Harriman to receive a progress report on the Paris Vietnam talks and said he would send a personal observer to the negotiations. Harriman said a new team would take over after Jan 20, with Nixon likely to appoint an observer soon. He noted talks would face months of bargaining despite Hanoi pulling substantial forces out of the South. The meeting preceded Nixon’s two day California trip for a Cardinal McIntyre dinner and a GOP governors convention.
Mt. Anthony Union High School students in the building trades course will assist in renovating the Beech Court apartments, purchased by HOME, under instructor Walter Foucher. The program runs three hours daily for three months starting in January, with supervision and contractor coordination to ensure no loss of income to local builders. HOME trustees expressed favorable interest and expect work to begin after Christmas with contractor clearance and a formal agreement.

Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey turned down an offer to be ambassador to the United Nations in the Nixon administration. Nixon aide Ronald L. Ziegler said Humphrey told Nixon he preferred to return to his home state after the Florida meeting following the election. Humphrey had disclosed a day earlier that he had declined a post but did not specify the job.
Fifty thousand leftist students and workers surged through Rome amid a 24 hour general strike paralyzing the city. Clashes with police wounded over 85 and 180 others nationwide as demonstrators waved red flags and carried portraits of Mao, Stalin, and Che Guevara. Police were ordered to avoid actions that might inflame crowds as government officials faced a 16 day crisis in Rome.
New York City NYU was disrupted when about 50 SDS students used a couch as a battering ram to breach a thick metal auditorium door and shout obscenities. They derailed a speech by Nguyen Huu Chi, Saigon’s UN observer, and taunted James Reston, forcing Reston to retreat from the rostrum. Officials said the incident caused the event to end, with no arrests reported. Chi remained calm as demonstrators tore down a South Vietnamese flag and raised a Viet Cong banner.
Elbert H. Henry will retire in June after 26 years as Burr and Burton Seminary head in Manchester. He started at BBS in 1943 as head master, led campus growth, and coached football. Henry, born Mansfield Massachusetts, plans to stay in Manchester with wife Ruth Rogers and two sons.
