Public school standards face state scrutiny Thursday
Southwestern Vermont residents will speak on proposed public school standards by the state Board of Education. The Manchester meeting at 7:30 p.m. is the second of five across the state to discuss the plan which would overhaul minimum standards, reporting, teacher pupil ratios, the Carnegie time unit, and graduation rules. Opposing views from the Vermont Education Association and administrators highlight concerns over control, definitions, and potential class sizes.

High court denies petition to re-argue Peru road case
The Vermont Supreme Court denied without comment a petition by the Vermont Natural Resources Council and the Agency of Environmental Conservation to re-argue the Peru Forest Highway No. 3 improvement case. The ruling follows the board’s earlier decision vacating an Environmental Board decision and leaves pending procedural questions about Act 250 review and possible further legal action by VNRC and the state.

Donald and Diana Bailey, recent Mt. Anthony Union High School graduates, describe losses after their White Birches trailer on West Main Street burned Friday night. Fire is believed to have started near the furnace area. the couple, who just married in August, were staying with relatives while repairs continue. They faced multiple trailer problems including broken pipes and improper setup, with a collection taken at the Iron Kettle Restaurant to aid them. The Baileys, who plan to finish school this spring, now live rent-free in an apartment owned by the trailer park owner.
