The United Auto Workers rejected contract offers from the big three and moved to finalizing its strike target. Authorities expected a decision by 5 30 p m EDT as the union seeks its most significant gains yet and warns the automakers against deliberate collusion.
Washington Senator George D. Aiken says a 22 member U S observation delegation to South Vietnam will amount to nothing and the South Vietnamese should supervise U S elections next year. The group arrived after Saigon asked for observers amid worrying signs of possible rigging. Meanwhile the UAW rejected auto industry offers and backed a strike pattern against Ford, GM or Chrysler, with Ford seen as the likely target.
Thurgood Marshall is confirmed by the Senate as the first Negro Supreme Court justice. His seat strengthens the liberal bloc led by Chief Justice Warren, with a 69-11 roll call in favor. Southern opponents call him a judicial activist and iconoclast.
President Johnsons team of 22 election observers in Vietnam split into five groups to assess voting conditions while incountry fighting continued. They toured Da Nang airspace and witnessed jets and ships pounding targets as South Vietnam prepared to elect a president, vice president, and senate.

White House and State Department gave no comment and warned against false hopes.

New York reports NBC and ABC technicians threaten a strike as 3,000 NABET members seek higher pay from 218 to 255 dollars weekly, plus a paid lunch and 72 hour schedule-notice. CBS technicians are not involved. Negotiations continue in Miami Beach under federal mediation.

A Berkshire County grand jury in Pittsfield heard testimony in the case of 19 year old Bonnie Pearson of Newport New Hampshire whose body was found Aug. 20 badly beaten in a Williamstown garage. A dozen of 33 summoned witnesses testified and proceedings may run through Friday. George McConnell of North Adams father of the defendant testified Wednesday.
