Portuguese officer threatens to use troops to block new dictatorship
Brigadier Franco Charais, commanding central region forces from Lisbon to Porto, warned he would turn his units into a guarantee against a totalitarian regime. The moderates seek to oust Communist backed Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves as Portugal’s political crisis deepens. Costa Gomes may replace Goncalves with Admiral Jose Pinheiro de Azevedo, a hardline Communist supporter seen as disciplinarian. The central region houses most tanks and armored units whose commanders back the moderates. Political sources say a nonpartisan government of national salvation could be formed. Goncalves’s fate to be decided after a forthcoming assembly meeting.
