Researching art in the cemetery by Rob Woolmington

William E. Harding Jr., a Williams College student, expanded a local art project on the First Church cemetery stones into a broader study. Funded by the Bennington Center Cemetery Association, he cataloged about 30 early headstones, photographing carvings and reviewing records to infer origins and meaning.

Connecticut born carver left 69 stones in Shaftsbury cemetery

The article notes Zeurbabel Collins, a Connecticut born stone carver who moved to Vermont in 1778, settled in Shaftsbury until his death in 1797, and created many grave markers in Shaftsbury and nearby towns. Harding suspects an apprentice aided Collins, but no proof is recorded. See Page 5.

VPIRG opposes eight-lane bridge at Troy N Y

Vermont group VPIRG urged Gov Thomas Salmon to oppose a proposed eight-lane bridge spanning the Hudson at Troy New York. They said it would sharply increase traffic on Route 9 in southern Vermont and could boost support for an East West superhighway. The Conservation Society of Southern Vermont backed the claim, while the New York State Department rejected the critique.

Vermont weighs wood as major energy source and risks

Gov. Salmon’s Wood Energy Task Force in Vermont says wood could supply at least a quarter of heating and electrical needs, though many questions remain. The 59 page report notes environmental concerns from timber removal, calls for pilot studies, and highlights tax incentives and transport as key issues while Green Mountain Power considers a wood fueled plant tied to a proposed pulp mill.

Soviet grain crop estimate slashed by five million tons

Washington officials cut the 1975 Soviet drought damaged crop forecast to 175 million tons from 180, citing lower acreage. New England governors reached a firm agreement on a regional energy policy to develop local sources, to be signed by November 9. The plan emphasizes nuclear power, refinery siting, outer continental shelf development, solar and hydroelectric power, with no firm timetables.
