State Sen Garry Buckley R Bennington County urges Gov Deane C Davis to merge motor vehicles and public safety on a five to six month trial. James Malloy would head both agencies while Public Safety Commissioner Erwin Alexander heads to retirement and Maj Glenn Davis acts from October. The idea meets with little enthusiasm in government panels and the General Assembly. Buckley notes the governor may appoint a new department head from outside state police ranks.
