Welfare centralization debate reaches Vermont panel
The Legislative Council Social Welfare Committee will meet to push a plan to consolidate all welfare services under the Vermont Department of Welfare. A New York consultant urged eliminating town welfare departments, with Gov Hoff endorsing state control to raise standards statewide. The same report noted state legislature sessions and platform drafting by the Vermont Republican State Committee for the Sept 24 convention at Montpelier High School. A separate item reports Vermont paying 45000 to a New Jersey couple for two acres atop Grandpa's Knob for a transmitter site in the state’s $2.3 million educational TV network. Also, the East Barnet Post Office will close Friday with mail service shifting to rural carriers from Barnet, and postmaster Morris Keenan will move to St Johnsbury.
