State Begins To Buy Housing Mortgages In Vermont
Vermont Treasurer Peter J. Hincks says the state may buy 3 million dollars in privately insured mortgages with retirement funds to back new programs easing a housing shortage. He bought 300000 dollars of mortgages as the first step, using funds from the Teachers, State Employe, and State Police retirement systems totaling nearly 58 million. Banks will service the loans while the state holds the mortgages, and the move aims to free bank lending amid tight money conditions.
