Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky pulled out of the October presidential race after U.S. efforts to keep him in. He proposed resigning with Thieu to permit a new election. Ky cited Thieu maneuvers and said he might remove his ballot status. Minh also quit, leaving a single candidate, triggering American concern and a Nixon reaction.
Authorities pursued Stephen Mitchell Bingham grandson of former U.S. senator Hiram Bingham to question him about how George Jackson obtained a pistol used in the San Quentin escape attempt. The inquiry aims to uncover how the weapon entered the visiting area and who assisted in the plan.
