Birth of Twins at UVM Probed by Pathologist

Burlington researchers led by Dr. Richard L. Naeye of the UVM College of Medicine study twins to explain higher infant mortality. Findings point to malnutrition and transplacental transfusion as key factors, with premature birth more common in twins. If undernourished twins survive early days they may catch up in growth by six to twelve months. Microsurgery could offer future solutions to cross placental transfusion and in utero intervention remains a distant possibility.
