U S ambassador killed as Cypriot mob storms embassy

UPI reports Ambassador Rodger Davies was slain by gunfire when 700 Greek Cypriot demonstrators stormed the U S embassy in Nicosia amid protests over Turkey's Cyprus invasion. An unidentified U S Marine guard also died. chaos saw cars blown up and the flag burned as rioters clashed with police and guards.

Ford pledges more help for veterans

President Ford, returning from his first out of town trip, vowed new VA leadership and aid for Vietnam veterans after the Cyprus ambassador’s death. He announced former Rep. Richard Roudebush as VA head designate and urged an open door to veterans, stressing each veteran’s name and personal problems. He also called for an end to Cyprus violence and renewed negotiations.

Vermont high court upholds 70 year age limit for judges

Vermont Supreme Court unanimously ruled elected judges over 70 cannot seek re election. The decision preserves the age restriction for state judges and affects side and probate judges statewide. Incumbents Estes and Bryant lose primary ballot spots. DeVito and Harwood secure Republican nominations to face Democrats Sheridan and McCarthy. Absentee ballots already printed with four Republican names before ruling changes.

Chittenden Trust gets tentative Pownal branch approval

Vermont state and federal regulators grant tentative approval for Chittenden Trust Co to open a Pownal branch subject to conditions tied to Catamount National Bank’s North Bennington branch. FDIC approval awaits hearings and possible protests, with Catamount given until Aug. 23 to file. Opening date deferred to after March 11, 1975.
