Turkish troops completed their offensive and seized the northern third of Cyprus ending with a cease fire at 6 p.m. local time. The UN said the cease-fire held with sporadic gunfire in Nicosia while Greece and Turkey clashed diplomatically over negotiations. Lefka and Nicosia saw heavy fighting earlier and UN forces reported casualties. The Security Council planned further talks as Turkey signaled willingness to negotiate after the fighting.

Hoff reveals milk money ties to 1970 campaign

Former Gov Philip Hoff said a 1970 campaign staffer, Kenneth Olson, was paid 5000 dollars by Ted Van Dyk Associates for reporting on New England events. Hoff linked the reports to Associated Milk Producers Inc, a Texas firm convicted of illegal contributions in past elections, but declined to label the payments illegal. Hoff, now Democratic State Chairman, said Olson had no reason to suspect illegality and had no requests about milk price matters.
