Bombers Cump Explosives On Cong Tunnel Complex

UPI reports B52 bombers unloaded hundreds of tons of explosives on a Viet Cong tunnel complex and base camp 325 miles north of Saigon. American planes battled MIG jets. weekly U.S. combat deaths near 5,000 with 101 killed last week and 593 wounded.

Grand Jury Weighs Indictment in Lane Case

Eighteen jurors of the Bennington County Grand Jury examined evidence against Ronald Francis Lane 25 of Bennington in the June 21 strangulation death of Rose Thibodeau. At press time the panel mulled whether to indict. Witnesses subpoenaed included state police officers and Lane’s parents. Attorney Joseph M. ONeill of Rutland was assigned for Lane as current Bennington Municipal Court action continues.

FED Tightens Reserves to Curb Credit Boom

The Federal Reserve Board raised reserve requirements on time deposits to the 6 percent statutory limit to curb bank lending and slow inflation. The move follows a string of rate hikes and aims to temper expansion of bank credit, with banks likely to hold about $450 million more in reserve. AFL CIO chief Meany urged immediate rate rollbacks, while Treasury reported the U.S. payments deficit narrowed to $163 million in Q2 1966, though trade surplus concerns remain.

Demonstrators May Greet LBJ In Burlington

A small group opposed to President Johnson’s Viet Nam policy may demonstrate when he arrives at Burlington Municipal Airport. A spokesman said several people have been contacted though attendance remains uncertain. Johnson and Gov. Hoff are due to land before 1 p.m. and depart for Addison to inspect a water project before returning to Burlington to speak briefly and continue to Manchester, New Hampshire.
