Democrats Plan Another Exercise In the Old Politics in Chicago
The piece critiques the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, noting dissident tensions, the old politics ethos led by John Bailey and Chicago Mayor Daley, and the clash between Humphrey's aims and Johnson era expectations. It discusses the convention's funding, personnel, and potential demonstrations, with Johnson’s lingering influence and the risk of returning to traditional power brokers.

Getting To Know Gamaliel Painter
OLD BENNINGTON, RETURNING from a week's Stay at Pike's Perch on Lake Champlain, I stopped in East Middlebury at the used book stand to read about Gamaliel Painter. Through W Storrs Lee's Town Father I learned how Painter, age 19, and his brother Elisha helped settle Vermont, built a cabin, served as captain of Artificiers in the Revolution, rebuilt a Middlebury cabin burned in war, and shaped Middlebury church and town governance. He sustained community leadership as sheriff, justice of the peace, legislator, and early educator while guiding the grammar school that formed Middlebury College. Despite being unlettered, his persistence fostered education and infrastructure, including turnpikes, a major church site, and a lasting town father legacy.
