Designated hitters to play in Series in 1977 World Series
The designated hitter will be allowed for the first time in the World Series after AL owners won the battle at the summer meetings. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn cast the tie breaking vote adopting an alternating DH format, with the NL opposing the rule. Kuhn said a uniform approach to the regular season is desirable. Managers also approved bonuses for hitters and pitchers and indemnification for officers in good faith. Expansion draft set for Nov 5 to stock Toronto and Seattle, with 12 existing teams protecting 15 players by Oct 25.
