Abortion and Sterilization Studied in Vermont Report
Vermont officials reviewed an 18 month study by the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Mental Retardation proposing that abortion be legally available for high risk pregnancies and that thorough study of sterilization is pursued to reduce births of mentally retarded individuals. The plan noted about 300 of 9,000 annual Vermont births may involve mental retardation and included a minority dissent questioning legal issues and medical approaches.
